Taint Like It Used To Be…
I had to be six years old when I went to my first baseball game. The New York Mets were taking on the Chicago Cubs over at Shea Stadium in Queens. My dad took me and we sat in the upper deck. The Met fans in the stands hated me that night. Each time Andre Dawson of the Cubs came to bat, I exploded into cheers. (Hey, he shared my last name. Could’ve been a cousin… you never know.)
Even from the upper deck, so far away from the field, to see those athletes pitch, hit and run with such precision and grace– it left me in awe. It made me appreciate that this game required so much skill, hard work, hand-eye coordination and preparation. It made me appreciate how much it took for those athletes to make it to the major leagues, to the summit of their sport. Made me want to put that work in myself. That day at Shea… after watching several games on television but now being somewhat up close and personal… I fell in love with baseball. (more…)
