Random Write

Wow… it’s really been more than a week since I’ve posted?!?!? I better go ahead and take out that loan in order to pay all the fines that are due the BBHOA. Lawd. It feels strange sitting down trying to write again. Who knew the beginning of a new season would be so damn busy?

In any event, it’s been an eventful eight days, which included a quick two-day trip to DC for work, the breaking in of my newest toy and a few trips to the movie theater last weekend. Throw in a nail-biting pennant race and some alcoholic toasts… and it’s cause for me to scribble out some thoughts as to what’s been inside my head. Gonna call this one a “Random Write.”

Here we go…

—> Roll Bounce. nullCaught this movie over the weekend. It’s the latest from director Malcolm D. Lee, whose credits include The Best Man and Undercover Brother. In this movie, Lee hooks up once again with “…Brother” man Chi McBride and teen rapper Bow Wow in what turns out to be a deft tribute to the 1970s and the pasttime that most enjoyed back then: roller skating. The soundtrack is awesome and will have you bouncing in your seats.

Others in the cast include Kelita Smith (so.damn.fine), Meagan Good (ummm, yeah… her, too), Mike Epps, Charlie Murphy, Wesley Johnathan and Marcus T. Paulk (Moesha’s lil brother). Special shouts go to cutie Jurnee Smollett as well as Wayne Brady, who truly embraced their roles in the film and had a damn good time with their characters.

—> Also caught Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride. null Can’t say that I loved it. But the person I was with did. Her: “Wasn’t it great?” Me: “It was good.” This back and forth took place at least five times. All I will admit to thinking was great was the animation and the music. The story was boring, the characters cliched and the ending… notsogreat. My movie partner was soooo into it, when I asked her if she would see it again, she said: “Of corpse.”

*rimshot, followed by crickets*

—> Did you know that it’s TOAST TO NEW YORK week here in the city?!?!?!? It’s a tribute to the bar industry, with over 125 bars in Manhattan serving $4 drinks between the hours of 5 to 9pm every day this week. It’s like Thanksgiving all week long!!! I’m getting giddy just typing this.

Thanks to Keish (go figure that someone from out of town had to put us on to this… LOL) for the heads up. I will be imbibing tonight and tomorrow after work. Anyone who’d like to join me… hit me up and we shall go forth and be merry. LOL

—> Made a quick trip to DC on Tuesday. Stayed overnight. Had meetings at one of the universities. Met the mayor, the school president, the chairman of the board of trustees, the provost, a lot of students. It was a great, quick trip and I was happy to put in some face time on behalf of the League.

nullNow, on one of my trips from the school to the hotel, I decided to take a cab. The dude that picked me up was cool. Told him where I wanted to go, he was on his way. But then… there was traffic. Another cabbie who’d just made a U-turn to avoid said traffic gave the dude a heads-up so he wouldn’t get stuck. Cool, right? Yup. But here’s where it got bad. Quickly.

I asked the dude what the other cabbie said was the reason for the backup. And then… he answered me. Ummm… if any of you have garbage disposals, yeah… that’s what it sounded like was lodged in his throat. His voice churned. CHURNED!!! Not only could I NOT understand a word, but instantly got a headache to boot. And then he just kept talking while going down some side streets to the hotel. The rest of the ride… *CHURNNNNNNNNNNNNN*. Until, of course, we get to the hotel, and in what seemed like the Queen’s English, he stated: “That will be $14.50, sir.”

Unbelievable. LOL

—> nullI know Panama posted about this a few days ago, but I, too, have just been put on to the iPod phenomenon. I got the Nano last week. And.I.love.it. All of my favorite joints are on this tiny little contraption, keeping me company on the trains, planes and buses I’ve had to ride the past eight days. And ummm… put that baby on shuffle mode and holy crap! it’s an ongoing party, with each song a wonderful surprise.

God bless Apple. (hoping the shout out might get me some free stuff in the future… LOL)

—> nullOK. It’s September 29th. Do you know who your playoff team is yet? Well, if so, then good for you. Because I don’t. And probably won’t until the last day of baseball’s regular season. Lawd, it’s crazy watching the Yankees play during this last week when each game counts more than the previous one. As I type this, they are in first place by one game… with four games remaining. They play second place Boston three times this weekend, with the playoffs on the line. Seriously, I have a headache.

But conversely, I couldn’t ask for anything more. I stated last month that I wanted, no, needed something to make me a fan again. Something to wake up the passion inside me for the game I grew up loving. Well, with the race as tight as it is… I’m back! LOL Go Yankees!!!

OK. That’s all I have for now. Just happy to be back to blogging. Today you’ve heard what’s on MY mind. Tomorrow will be all about what’s on YOUR minds. Should be fun.

nullDays til Miami: 5.

  5. I was wondering if we were going to have to get John Walsh from America’s Most Wanted to hunt you down. Good to see you’ve been productive in your absence.

  15. Hey Will -

Just caught onto your Blog last week. I’m a recent NYC transplant here in DC…and I’ve been proposed to a number of times as a result of my “slammin’” Banana Pudding, mac and cheese, and carrot cake ! You can get a taste when you’re in my neighborhood…Say the word.

  16. Ha!… The garbage disposal analogy has me in stiches. You know Will, even on random “shuffle” postings, you’re “all write.” *Patting myself on the back for a clever pun* (Lol)

    Comment by M. Elle — 10.01.05 @ 4:55 pm

  17. Flag on the play. Meant to write “stitches”

  18. Oh… and at the risk of being a spammer, I must concur that I loved “Roll, Bounce”. It was sooo cute! Just young black kids being young black kids (made me want to get out my hot pink skates from ‘88) And hearing EWF’s new song in the party scene made me by their album. Verdict?… it’s “Pure Gold” :)
